Celebrating the Past - Looking to the Future Part II of III
Would you say our country is different now compared to the history you read? Do these articles (Parts I and II) give you an idea as to why everyone (it seems) wants to come to live in this country? Those that do not want to come here want to do us harm, because of radical or fanatical ideology at the worst, or, at the least, unfamiliarity with the meaning of freedom. But that is a global phenomenon, a subject for another time.
America Changes
In 1913, President Woodrow Wilson must have sensed something had gone wrong internally with America’s experiment when he said:
“A nation which does not remember what it was yesterday, does not know what it is today nor what it is trying to do. We are trying to do a futile thing if we do not know where we came from or what we have been about ….
“The Bible … is the one supreme source of revelation of the meaning of life, the nature of God and spiritual nature and needs of men. It is the only guide of life which really leads the spirit in the way of peace and salvation.
“America was born a Christian nation. America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness which are derived from the revelation of Holy Scripture.”
Then, as now, these words of our 28th President of the Unites States apply: “There are a good many problems before the American people today and before me as President, but I expect to find the solution to those problems just in the proportion that I am faithful in the study of the Word of God.”
In reviewing historical archives of the beginnings of our Republic reveals courageous men, men of conviction, men of character who, when they stood, must have cast long shadows, shadows that honest and able men everywhere would be proud to emulate. Today we ought to ask: Where, O where are men of such caliber? Has adversarial or other fear frozen the hearts and minds of potential leaders? Our nation’s early leaders, while enduring the harshest conditions, rightfully earned their unmatched, sterling leadership reputation, as recorded in history books that have not been altered to destort our magnificent past.
This concludes Part II. Part III offers a prayer. Be sure to tune it.
